Anna Julia Cooper, our namesake, once wrote, “Not far from the kindergarten age I decided upon my career. I feel the vocation for which I was prepared was the education of neglected people. Teaching has always seemed to me the noblest of callings and presents a stronger appeal than money.” She went on to add, “To me life has meant a big opportunity and I am thankful that my work has always been the sort that beckoned me on, leaving no room for blasé philosophizing and rebellious resentment and with just enough opposition to give zest to the struggle, just enough hope of scoring somewhere among the winners to keep my head ‘unbowed tho bloody.’” At AJC, we try to keep her spirit alive in our work with low-income families in Richmond’s East End. We’re always looking for individuals who are moved by her same spirit to consider joining our 'community of affection.' Don't ever hesitate to reach out.
