The Walker School invites applications for an Associate Director of College Counseling. Walker’s college counseling program provides a comprehensive, individualized approach and challenges students to explore new and exciting educational opportunities. The Associate Director will work as part of a team to guide students to identify colleges and universities that match their goals and values, develop relationships with students and families, and provide advice and encouragement through every phase of the process. Our department focuses on student well-being and developmentally appropriate programming related to the college process. 
 
QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS
  • A desire to work collaboratively in a team environment while also being comfortable with autonomy
  • Enthusiasm for working with and motivating high school students
  • Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing to internal and external constituencies
  • Demonstrates cultural awareness and a commitment to developing one’s own cultural competency in a community that values “the infinite worth and dignity of the individual”
  • Possesses extensive knowledge about the ever-evolving landscape of college admissions. Staying abreast of new policies at colleges and universities through professional conferences/meetings, college tours, review of relevant publications, and networking
  • A comfortability with technology and staying informed of emerging technologies
  • A strong work ethic, adaptability, flexibility, strong organizational and time management skills, enthusiasm for working in a thriving school setting, and maturity will be highly valued in this position
  • The ability to thrive in a fast-paced office environment that values collaboration and innovation while juggling multiple projects and meeting essential deadlines
  • Ability to attend some meetings outside of the typical school day, including before and after the school day, in the evening, and sometimes on weekends for special events
  • Being a positive representative of The Walker School with an understanding of appropriate relationships with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
  • Advise and support approximately 30-35 students in each class through all phases of the college process
  • Conduct individual, family, small group, and class-wide meetings
  • Communicate effectively with students and parents on all aspects of college admissions, standardized testing, and financial aid
  • Support students in the completion of applications- admissions, scholarships, summer programs, etc
  • Work closely with the College Counseling team to implement and run events and to develop new student and parent programming
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with admissions colleagues at a large array of colleges and universities
  • Participate in professional development opportunities relating to college counseling and college admissions at the local, state, and national levels
  • Participate fully and enthusiastically in the life of The Walker School through department meetings, faculty meetings, professional development opportunities, and student engagement
  • Ethical behavior, professionalism, and regular and reliable attendance are important for this position
  • Fulfill additional duties as assigned
CORE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in college counseling and/or college admissions
