The Assistant Director of Lower School supports the work of the Lower School Director in running the Lower School program. The Assistant Director of Lower School is a full-time on campus school administrator who
Supports the Academic Program
- Conducts observations of teachers to provide feedback to academic staff and to develop professional development; uses data to model best practices at faculty meetings and in classes
- Coaches teachers on standards-based practices
- Collects, analyzes, interprets, and uses student data to identify ways to more effectively plan and differentiate instruction based on student needs
- Supports academic team in developing action plans based on data, provide feedback on action plans, and monitor implementation of action plans
- Reviews lesson plans of teachers and provides feedback on objectives and lesson alignment.
Manages the Student Culture
- Enforcing school-wide expectations daily with students
- Managing student behavior that requires time and intervention beyond the classroom
- Manages student attendance system and policies, and regularly intervenes with students whose attendance does not meet school-wide expectations.
- Leads restorative intervention for students who have engaged in behaviors that have caused significant disruption/harm to the community
- Assist in scheduling special programs and gatherings with the Lower School Administrative Team.
- Keeps the Lower School Division Director fully informed on student issues and all other relevant matters pertaining to school life.
- Helps to supervise students as directed (e.g., arrivals/departures, parking lots, lunch periods, hall duty, extracurricular programs, etc.).
- Prepares and maintains accurate records. Submits reports on time. Maintains discipline records for the maximum period mandated by law and/or board policy.
- Manages the implementation of Conscious Discipline and a positive behavior reinforcement system
- Models the Core Values and contributes to a healthy Lower School culture
Manages interventions for Students
- Analyze academic, behavioral, and attendance data to identify and correct trends
- Lead strategic initiatives to improve academic outcomes and/or attendance/behavioral outcomes
- Collaborates with counselors and administrators to ensure appropriate student supports are in place
- Meets with parents/stakeholders to ensure appropriate supports are provided to students outside of school
Qualifications
Strong candidates for the Lower School Assistant Director position will have significant knowledge of and expertise in both academic and cultural elements of school leadership, while demonstrating: deep care for students, and families, an ability to be a self-starter and take initiative, a love for collaboration and teamwork, strong work ethic, excellent organizational skills, flexibility, and ease and experience in managing and analyzing data. Additionally, a strong candidate will possess
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university (Master’s Preferred)
- Minimum of 5 years experience working in an elementary/lower school with at least 4 years of teaching experience. Independent Day School experience is a plus.
- Minimum of 2 years of leadership experience in an elementary/lower school environment, experience managing others preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in leading, motivating, growing, coaching, and developing high-performing teams which deliver results
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills including working with students, teachers, leaders, and families
- Ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse and multicultural student population
- Ability to respond effectively to the high expectations of student and parent populations
