The Middle School Dean of Student Support is responsible for providing support for students, parents, teachers and administration in order to enhance and enable student successes in school. The Dean of Student Support will work closely with the Middle School Administrative Team in carrying out the academic and character programs of the school. This position will be proactive, seeking ideas, and programs to support student growth and wellness, while also being responsive to immediate disciplinary needs. This will include bi-yearly discussions with the Director of Diversity to ensure that needs of all students are being thoughtfully considered. This position will also include a significant role as a Faculty Performance Review Lead and oversee a cohort of teachers in promoting professional growth.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teacher Support
Oversee a cohort of Middle School teachers as a Faculty Performance Review lead responsible for conducting SMART goal meetings and formal class observations and evaluations.
Lead and facilitate the Middle School’s Advisory program, which includes working with grade-level team leaders to research, define, and implement best Advisory practices.
Attend and participate in Middle School Administrative Team meetings.
Coordinate, plan, and prepare teachers for Student-Led Conferences.
Student Support
Investigate current practices at other independent schools and recommend refinements to the Middle School Division Head.
Explore opportunities to implement enrichment and wellness opportunities in support of Latin’s Mission and recommend refinements to the Middle School Division Head.
Participate in student grade-level trips as relationship building opportunities.
Attend grade level meetings and assist teachers in developing and implementing action plans for struggling students.
Monitor academic performance of students and devise academic support plans in conjunction with the Learning Resource Department, when needed.
Provide opportunities for students to offer climate feedback in an effort to promote a positive school culture.
Student Discipline
Oversee all disciplinary matters in conjunction with the MS Administrative Team.
Support teacher needs for assistance with discipline issues.
Support MS counselor in student mediation and discipline.
Participate in or lead development of positive behavior support systems and development of intervention strategies.
Resolve student behavioral concerns in a fair and timely manner.
Maintain records of disciplinary actions taken, including drafting letters to parents.
Lead the Middle School Honor Council.
Teaching Expectations
The Dean of Student Support will teach two Middle School classes.
Administrator Support
Assist Assistant MS Head and MS Head with student scheduling.
Assist with dances, Football games, class trips.
Provide teacher substitution if available as needed.
Make recommendations to Head of Middle School to enhance Middle School Experience
Work with Latin’s Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as well as the Middle School DEI liaisons to ensure inclusive excellence is embedded in student support.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Subject position supervises faculty assigned according to the MS Organizational Chart.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years teaching experience
A preference will be given to those with experience in building Advisory programs, conducting teaching observations and evaluations, and assisting struggling students.
Experience working with culturally diverse families and communities.
Skills
Excellent writing and speaking skills with ability and confidence to communicate with all constituents of Charlotte Latin.
Communicates clearly and effectively to others the steps in a process and the importance of following that process. Clearly understands the rationale for why processes must follow certain steps.
Can identify multiple projects and prioritize them in order to meet required deadlines.
Adheres to the highest level of professionalism by demonstrating honesty, integrity, confidentiality, and maturity.
Initiate proactive communication with Head of Middle School about serious issues involving students or parents.
A ssess and differentiate multiple viewpoints and clarify issues for students, parents, teachers, or others.
Set a positive tone in actions and words in and out of school day for students.
