Spanning 60 beautiful acres in the heart of Virginia, Fuqua School serves approximately 300 students in grades PreK-12 in a familial and close-knit learning environment. Approximately 45 faculty members work together to offer a well-rounded and challenging curriculum designed to inspire students to discover and fulfill their boundless individual potential. The School endeavors to promote academic success, healthy social and emotional development, critical and creative thinking, leadership and integrity, technology literacy, and civic participation among all its students. Universally, students, faculty, and staff agree that the familial nature of the school is one of its most defining characteristics. The School is seeking a new Lower School Head with strong leadership skills, a friendly and approachable manner, and a passion for learning and mentoring students and faculty. The Lower School serves approximately 160 students with 30 faculty and staff.
Requirements
Experience teaching at the lower school level and/or prior school administrative experience
Master’s degree in a relevant field
Strong base of knowledge about the developmental level of young children
A fondness for the age group
A love of the independent school life
Responsibilities
General
reports to the Head of School and advises him on all matters pertaining to the division
upholds and furthers the philosophy and policies of the school, as well as the academic standards
acts as the overall instructional and administrative leader for grades Junior Kindergarten-6
Faculty
supervises, evaluates, and promotes the professional development of the faculty
plans and chairs monthly division meetings
meets with all teachers regularly and weekly with new faculty
makes recommendations to Head of School regarding faculty teaching and supervisory assignments
interviews substitute candidates and with the support of lower school office staff maintains substitute list annually; arranges for substitute teachers within division; acts as emergency classroom substitute
Students
maintains personal contact with each child
counsels students on an informal basis about personal and academic matters
maintains student discipline within the division in collaboration with faculty, Head of School, and administrative support
oversees the student government system in conjunction with class sponsors
develops and implements new student orientation programs
coordinates communication between faculty about student progress
coordinates grade reports within division; reads, oversees revision of, and approves all grade reports and comments; develops and coordinates grade distribution report
serves as liaison with tutors and the guidance counselor
oversees all activities and clubs with administrative support
oversees planning of all Lower School field trips
Parents
meets with parents to discuss concerns
keeps individual parents informed of student progress in a proactive manner, especially when difficulty sets in
maintains personal contact with families; serves as primary liaison with families at times of crisis
coordinates activities of PTSA within division
organizes class meetings as needed
Curriculum
oversees curriculum development, refinement, evaluation, and implementation, along with the Curriculum Coordinators, other Division Heads, and Head of School
approves, along with the Head of School, faculty requests for instructional materials; monitors material use and textbook use and selection
works with Athletic Director to coordinate athletic program
works with special events coordinator to support Lower School involvement in special events
Administrative
creates master schedule and Lower School student schedules with the guidance counselor, registrar, and Lower School Administrative Assistant
creates schedules for special events with administrative support
coordinates and plans Lower School class trips
coordinates special assemblies as appropriate
coordinates (with Head of School) awards
oversees expenditures within division
coordinates transition between divisions
advises Head of School on changes to Parents’ Handbook
interviews and hires substitute teachers; assists with all faculty searches
Admissions
assists Director of Admissions and Head of School with admissions and marketing initiatives
participates in admissions open houses
advises Head of School on admissions decisions
