Director of Teaching and Learning 3·5          Reports to: Head of Lower School
The Lovett School seeks a Director of Teaching and Learning to begin in January 2023.  This is a twelve-month position and this person serves on the Lower School Administrative Team. As a member of the leadership team, this person is responsible for carrying out the Mission and Vision, collaborating on Lower School priorities, and supporting the supervision of faculty.  Knowledge of and experience with K - 5 curriculum, character education, various learning styles, and diversity, equity,and inclusion work required.

Qualifications and Skills
  • An advanced degree in Curriculum andInstruction or related degree is preferred
  • Experience with Lucy Calkins Reading and Writing Workshops, Orton Gillingham, and Math in Focus required.  Experience with Understanding by Design and Experience teaching Elementary grades 3-5 will also be preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in a school setting
  • Demonstrate a genuine love for Lower School students and a keen awareness of the gifts and needs of this age group
  • Dedication to creating and sustaining an atmosphere of high expectation and high support
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively
  • Ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication and organizational skills
  • Lead with curiosity and intellectual humility

Primary Responsiblllties
  • Embrace and impart Lovett's Core Values, K-12 whole-child approach, workshop approach to teaching, and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging efforts
  • Create and evaluate 3-5 curricula, assessments, and learning progressions
  • Partner with Team Leaders, Lower School Director of Teaching and Learning K-2, and Lower School leadership team to ensure K-5 cohesion and alignment
  • Partner with Middle and Upper Schools to ensure K-12 continuity
  • Lead and support grade level teams in grades 3-5 with a focus on backwards design curriculum mapping, differentiation, interdisciplinary work, assessment, and data collection
  • Provide one-on-one instructional coaching for Lower School teachers
  • Mentor, support,and develop leadership among Lower School teachers in grades 3-5
  • In partnership with Lower School Director of Teaching and Learning K-2, design and facilitate faculty meetings and additional in-house professional development opportunities
  • Research best practice in all areas of curricula; research and align outside professional development with faculty needs and facilitate outside consultants
  • Manage and maintain professional development budget
  • Manage curriculum artifacts (e.g. report cards, homework, unit guide, etc.)
  • Support Lower School Admissions by providing input on observation protocols and reading applicant files
  • Lead parent workshops around topics of teaching and learning
  • Interview, recruit, and hire co-teachers
  • Complete various administrative duties as assigned by the Head of Lower School
