The Head of Lower School is the senior administrative leader of grades K - 4 of Charlotte Preparatory School. The head of lower school is responsible for all administrative and executive roles in the lower school, including overseeing the educational program; implementing all school policies, procedures, and practices; and maintaining a strong, inclusive, and positive school culture. The head of lower school reports to the head of school and is a member of the senior administrative team. This is an exempt, full time, 12-month administrative position effective July 1, 2023.

  • Create a well-rounded, comprehensive learning environment that respects and supports all aspects of the ideal development of the lower school student
  • Oversee and manage the day-to-day operations and decision-making for the lower school
  • In conjunction with the head of school, develop and implement school policies and procedures
  • In conjunction with the head of school, develop and implement lower school programs in support of the strategic plan of the school
  • Oversee and manage all substitute teacher needs
  • Work with the faculty and director of curriculum to oversee all aspects of the lower school curriculum
  • Serve as a positive, collaborative member of the administration team, including acting as an ambassador for the school with prospective parents, other schools, and other constituencies
  • Serve on school committees as required
  • Maintain a collegial relationship with and among all lower school faculty
  • Plan regular team meetings and assist with planning of full faculty meetings
  • Responsible for hiring, supervising, and evaluating lower school faculty and staff
  • Work in close collaboration with the heads of early and middle school to facilitate strong connections between divisions; create a cohesive, rational curricular scope and sequence; create smooth transitions for students moving between the sister divisions
  • Plan and oversee execution of parent education programs for lower school parents
  • Work with the school counselor to manage the school’s counseling, character development, and leadership development programs of the lower school
  • Create and maintain the lower school schedule for teachers/students
  • Communicate proactively and positively with various constituent stakeholder groups, including the successful management of parents and their concerns
  • Act as the primary manager of lower school student code of conduct and significant disciplinary actions
  • In conjunction with the director of finance and operations, budget and manage school resources
  • In conjunction with the learning specialist and school counselor, support at-risk students and develop plans of action for student improvement
  • Some weekend and evening events/functions are required
  • Other duties and responsibilities as required


  • Bachelor’s degree in appropriate field required; master’s degree strongly preferred
  • Successful experience as a lower school teacher
  • Several years of school administrative experience, preferably in the independent school sector
  • Significant experience working with lower school students
  • An abiding commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and facility working with diverse constituents
