Every successful school must rest on a firm financial foundation–but financial management can be the area where new and aspiring Heads have the least experience. In fact, 48% of new Heads feel unprepared to manage their school’s financial health, according to a recent NAIS survey. Our mentoring program cultivates the skills you’ll need to help your school prosper.
The finance mentoring program includes in-depth consulting sessions. You’ll get tailored training in essential topics, such as budgeting, financial strategic planning, capital campaigns, tuition setting and financial aid, financial sustainability, and working with your CFO and board finance committees. You’ll also get to discuss your immediate concerns with our experienced consultant, Mike Waylett.
Mike Waylett’s successful 40-year career in independent schools has included oversight of financial operations, human resources, buildings and grounds, major construction projects, and advancement offices, as well as significant experience with governance issues, strategic planning, and accreditation. Mike has held senior administrative and Head of School roles and has chaired numerous accreditation teams.

"Mike’s mentorship was transformative for me. His extensive expertise as a former Head of School and financial consultant was invaluable. Moreover, Mike is a natural teacher! He welcomed and addressed all of my questions and offered complex case studies to introduce concepts and challenge my thinking. Each session was crafted to my needs and enhanced my grasp of financial stewardship and strategic planning. Mike’s insights into Board/Head of School dynamics were particularly enlightening, proving crucial as I prepared for leadership interviews. I will enter my first Headship with confidence, equipped with the strategies and understanding imparted by Mike’s guidance."
